Sailing from the UK, this summer voyage aboard the all-suite MS Island Sky takes us along the coast of France and the Iberian Peninsula to the Balearic Islands and offers a wonderful opportunity to experience some of the most picturesque and interesting places in the region along the way. We will sample the wonderful wine and food of the region and will visit some of Europe’s most captivating landscapes, charming towns and places rich in maritime history such as Gibraltar and the fascinating Spanish port of Cartagena. Who could fail to be enchanted by the natural splendour of the coastal scenery or by the timeless beauty of Oporto and the picturesque islands such as Belle Ile and Menorca.
The itinerary has been carefully designed to combine some ‘must see’ sites together with some smaller places that are totally unsuitable for vessels larger than ours. Owing to the fact that our small ship can moor centrally, we have the added advantage of being able to access the towns by foot in many ports of call and we have also included time at leisure for individual exploration enabling you to soak up the atmosphere at your own pace along with three relaxing days at sea. In addition we have the added benefit of excellent local guides and our knowledgeable Guest Speaker who will add much to your experience and knowledge of this fascinating region. In the company of just over 100 passengers, enjoy discovering Medieval towns, ancient sites and timeless islands with their aura of history and spectacular beauty which will capture our hearts as we travel a less well trodden path around the Mediterranean to Menorca.

The MS Island Sky is one of our two flag ships and sister vessel to the MS Hebridean Sky. Both vessels were built in the same ship yard in Italy at similar times and share the same excellent attributes that make them two of the finest small ships in the world.
Itinerary
Day 1 Portsmouth, England.
Embark this afternoon. Transfers will be provided from Portsmouth Harbour Railway Station to the port at a fixed time. Enjoy welcome drinks and dinner as we sail this evening.
Day 2 Guernsey, Channel Islands.
This morning we arrive on Guernsey, the ‘Island of Flowers’ where on a panoramic drive we will witness the beautiful coastline, rocky cliffs and wild sandy bays. Along the coast we will see the Martello Towers built during the Napoleonic Wars and the fortifications built by the Germans during the occupation in the Second World War. Return to the ship via country lanes and the Little Chapel, built in 1914 as a miniature version of the famous basilica at Lourdes and covered in fragments of shattered china, seashells and pebbles. This afternoon is free to explore the picturesque town of St Peter Port at your own pace. Please note that we will be at anchor today and will use the vessel’s Zodiacs to transfer ashore.
Day 3 Douarnenez & Locronan, France.
After a morning cruising we arrive in the Finistere region of France and the port of Douarnenez which prospered as a major centre for the sardine industry in the 19th century. Traces of these days still show in the architecture and the old fisherman’s houses that line the harbour, whilst at the Port Musee you may find a few traditional boats at anchor. Choose to spend the afternoon exploring the town or alternatively join a tour to Locronan, one of the most picturesque and preserved Medieval Breton villages which grew from the manufacture of sailcloth. Visit the 15th century church, remarkable for its stone vaulting and stained-glass windows, before walking through the craft workshops. You might also be tempted to taste the famous “kouignamann”, a traditional Breton butter cake.
Day 4 Belle Ile.
Lying just off the coast of Morbihan is Belle Ile, the largest of all the Breton islands with a dramatic coastline comprising cliffs, creeks and beaches. This morning we will drive to see the Grand Phare, the island’s tallest lighthouse, the Port Coton needles lying off the coast and the village of Kervilahouen where Claude Monet spent time painting the wild coast. After lunch on board spend the afternoon in Le Palais exploring the town at your own pace, maybe visit the star-shaped citadel which was stormed by British troops in 1761 as they took control of the island for two years. Please note that we will be at anchor today and will use the vessel’s Zodiacs to transfer ashore.
Day 5 At Sea.
Spend the day at sea as we make our way to Spain. Maybe join a talk in the lounge or find a spot on deck.
Day 6 Vigo, Spain.
Arrive into Spain at the Galician port of Vigo where there will be a choice of activities. Perhaps visit the beautiful walled Medieval city of Tui, located on a hill next to the Portuguese border on the River Mino with its imposing cathedral that was built in the 12th century and later converted into a battlement-studded fortress. Its tower forms a magnificent balcony over the river and, from it, the city appears to be terraced out of the hill. We will also take the opportunity to have a tasting of some of the local Albarino wine. Spend the afternoon at leisure in Vigo where you can explore the narrow streets of the old town or visit the Castro Fotress which was built in 1665 to defend the city from the English Navy and offers views over the city.
Day 7 Oporto, Portugal.
The port of Leixoes is our base for our day of activities around Oporto. We will visit the Quinta de Aveleda, located in the heart of the Vinho Verde Demarcated Region, which creates a young fresh wine with low alcoholic content and a lightly fruity flavour. After exploring the beautiful park and gardens with rare specimens of trees, shrubs and flowers which surround the Manor House we will learn about the wine which has been created here since 1947. We also explore Oporto including the impressive St Francis Church and the Ribeira, a riverside quarter made up of narrow, twisting streets and shadowy arcades. Our tour will conclude at one of the many port wine cellars where we hear all about the wines and how they are produced.
Day 8 At Sea.
Enjoy a relaxing day at sea as we continue our journey around the Iberian Peninsula.
Day 9 Gibraltar.
We have the whole day to explore this strategic British outpost of the Mediterranean. After taking in the views from Europa Point, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, we continue to the Great Siege Tunnels, a labyrinth of tunnels built to defend Gibraltar from Spanish and French attacks between 1779 and 1783 and revered as one of the finest defensive systems. Also see the Gibraltar Museum where we can learn more about the Great Siege, the geological origins of the rock and the natural history of the area. After lunch on board there will be some free time for independent exploration before we sail tonight.
Day 10 Malaga, Spain.
Returning to Spain we will explore the historic and reinvented city of Malaga. A morning tour will take us to the 14th century Castillo de Gibralfaro, built on a hill overlooking the city and once considered the most impregnable fortress in Iberia. Continue to La Merced Square where we see the birthplace of Pablo Picasso before we visit the impressive 16th century cathedral which was built on the remains of a mosque. With its mix of Renaissance and Gothic styles it has been declared a national landmark. Alternatively spend some time exploring at your own pace, you may wish to head to the market, watch the world go by or, for the art lovers, visit the Picasso Museum. We will sail in the early afternoon.
Day 11 Cartagena.
This morning we arrive in Spain’s main naval port of Cartagena. Enter the deep natural harbour through two fortified rocky headlands for a morning of exploration in this historic city that dates back to the Phoenicians. Hannibal used it as his capital city on the Iberian peninsula and named it after Carthage in North Africa whilst the Romans used it as a strategic port and administrative centre. The city walls remained intact until the 20th century, creating a dense historic centre. Take the lift or walk up to Concepcio Castle for amazing views of the city and harbour, view the Roman amphitheatre and the archaeological site of Molinete where work continues to uncover the Roman city. Later enjoy a stroll along the tree-lined harbour promenade as we return to the MS Island Sky. Spend the afternoon at sea as we sail to the Balearic Islands.
Day 12 Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca.
The largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca has a rich history dating back to the Phoenicians when it was under control of Carthage, the principal North African city at that time, before flourishing under Roman rule. From our berth in Palma we will take the beautifully maintained vintage train that connects Palma with the pretty town of Soller on the island’s west coast and enjoy splendid mountain views of the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the course of just seven kilometres the railway rises 199 metres, runs through 13 tunnels and crosses several bridges. We will enjoy some time to explore Soller before taking a scenic drive to the village of Valldemossa. With a population of around 2000, Valldemossa is a quiet and traditional town with narrow streets and lanes. We will enjoy a walk around the town followed by lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Palma where we will have some time to explore at leisure or return to the ship.
Day 13 Mahon, Menorca.
Over breakfast we arrive in Menorca, the most northerly of the Balearics and the least dedicated to tourism. The island offers pastoral countryside, historic towns and superb beaches. An island drive this morning will include the mysterious rock mounds (talayots) and megalithic stone monuments which were erected some 4000 years ago before we continue to aristocratic Ciudadella, the architectural showpiece of Menorca. Situated at the head of a long channel from the sea, the city has had its share of disputes over sovereignty, and its character reflects the influence of Moorish, Turkish and Spanish rule. After lunch on board there will be time to explore the pretty harbour town of Mahon at your own pace as we moor overnight.
Day 14 Menorca to London.
Disembark this morning and transfer to the airport for our scheduled flight to London.
